Splurge: Roland Mouret Vallenar two-tone double-crepe coat $959
Steal: Dorothy Perkins Ivory and Black Duster Coat $95

I can remember as a child my mother coming to kiss me goodnight before heading off to a ball or some formal dinner with my father when we were living in Scotland. She had a great camel hair coat that seemed to envelop her in its folds, transforming her from my familiar mother who smelled of vanilla into this truly elegant creature.

A good coat is one of the staples of every stylish woman’s wardrobe, and since it’s such a long-term item, I think it’s worth spending more on something you’re going to wear every day for at least 3 months of the year! Even longer if you live on the East Coast or Britain! Don’t forget that during the colder winter months your coat/jacket is the first thing people will see about you, so make a good impression!

I have a tendency to buy most of my clothing in neutral colors…i.e. black, white, tan…until recently. Lately, I haven’t been able to wear enough shocking pink, cobalt blue, or animal print to suit me and I think my skin tone is the better for it! Last week I snagged a vibrant green lady-like dress coat from Banana Republic for such a steal that it’s almost ludicrous. Almost, but not quite.

Personally, I think I may save up for the Zara camel coat to update my winter wardrobe. What’s on your winter wardrobe wish list???
